Choosing a home health care
provider
for yourself or a loved one is a serious matter and can, to some,
seem overwhelming. But be assured that home health care agencies are in
the industry because of a strong commitment to care for others.
To help you assess which
agency might best serve your individual needs, we suggest you call the
agency and ask the following questions…
Do they provide literature
explaining its services and fees? Do they have a printed Bill of Rights
for their patients?
How does this home health care
provider select and train its employees? Does it protect its caregivers
with written policies and competitive compensation?
Are nurses required to
evaluate the patient’s home care needs? Do they consult the patient’s
physician and family members?
Does this provider include the
patient and his/ her family members in developing the plan of care? Are
they involved in making care plan changes?
Is the patient’s course of
treatment documented? Are specific tasks to be carried out by caregivers
written and tracked? Is the patient provided a copy of this plan?
How is the quality of care
supervised? Do supervisors make visits?
Who can the patient call with
questions or complaints?
Are the billing and payment
policies clear? How often will you be billed?
What procedures are in place
in the case of an emergency? Is someone on call 24-hours a day, seven days
a week?
